GUIDE 02 / NILI-RAVI & KUNDI BUFFALO

Pakistan's milk comes
from the buffalo. Manage it right.

The Nili-Ravi and Kundi buffalo produce over 60% of Pakistan's total milk supply. This guide covers everything — feeding, silent heat detection, Ovsynch breeding, health, housing, and the digital tools that separate a profitable bathan from a struggling one.

01 / ORIGIN & BREED PROFILE

Pakistan's national
dairy buffalo.

Named after the Nili Bar and Ravi River of central Punjab — the world's most productive river buffalo breed.

The Nili-Ravi is Pakistan's national dairy buffalo and one of the highest-yielding river buffalo breeds in the world. Named after the Nili Bar (the blue-green waters of the Ravi riverbed) and the Ravi River itself, it originated in the Sahiwal-Montgomery belt of central Punjab and has been selectively bred for milk production over centuries.

Its milk fat percentage of 6.0–7.5% is the defining commercial advantage — nearly double that of Holstein-Friesian cow milk (3.5–4.0%). This rich, thick milk is Pakistan's preferred raw material for desi ghee, yoghurt (dahi), makhan, khoya, paneer, and chai. In the local market, buffalo milk commands a significant premium over processed cow milk.

The Nili-Ravi is recognised by its distinctive curly tail switch with a white tip, massive udder, broad forehead, and calm temperament. It is highly adaptable to managed farm conditions and responds excellently to routine — making it suitable for both traditional smallholder management and modern commercial operations.

Buffalo vs HF: HF produces 3× more raw milk volume, but buffalo milk has nearly 2× higher fat. For desi ghee, yoghurt, and makhan markets, buffalo wins on value per litre. For formal processor volume contracts, HF wins. Many commercial farms in Punjab run both — HF for processors, buffalo for premium desi markets. See our Holstein-Friesian Management Guide →

03 / FEEDING & NUTRITION

Structured feeding adds
20–35% more milk.

Traditional ad-hoc feeding leaves enormous production potential on the table. TMR pays for itself within weeks.

Dry Matter Intake

A lactating Nili-Ravi needs 2.8–3.2% of body weight in DM daily. For a 500 kg buffalo: 14–16 kg DM. Buffalo are more efficient fibre converters than cattle — they extract more energy from wheat straw and poor-quality roughage.

Water Requirements

A lactating buffalo drinks 60–90 litres per day. In summer, canal or wallow tank access is critical for both hydration and thermoregulation. Farms with wallow tanks consistently report higher summer milk yields.

Seasonal Fodder Calendar

Rabi (Oct–Mar): Berseem + lucerne + wheat straw — the best season for buffalo nutrition. Kharif (Apr–Sep): Maize/sorghum silage + green maize. Silage bridging the lean season is the single biggest production upgrade available.

Income Over Feed Cost

At 12 L × Rs 160/L = Rs 1,920/day revenue minus Rs 400–500 feed cost = Rs 1,420–1,520 IOFC/buffalo/day. Track this daily in Herd Manager's Feed module.

04 / BREEDING — SILENT HEAT

The challenge that costs
Pakistani farmers billions.

Silent heat (anoestrus and sub-oestrus) is the #1 reproductive problem in Pakistani buffalo herds. 40–60% of heats go completely undetected without proper tools.
WHY BUFFALO HIDE HEAT
  • Seasonal anoestrus — short-day breeders cycle less in summer
  • Nutritional anoestrus — underfed buffalo don't cycle post-calving
  • Post-partum interval — naturally longer (60–90 days) than cattle
  • Stress suppression — heat, overcrowding, poor water access

05 / MILK RECORDING & LACTATION

The richest milk
in any dairy breed.

Nili-Ravi buffalo milk fat of 6–7.5% is nearly double HF cow milk — commanding premium prices at every level of Pakistan's dairy value chain.
LACTATION CURVE

Peak at 6–10 weeks

Buffalo peak later than cattle (6–10 vs 4–6 weeks) but the decline is slower (6–8% per month vs 8–10%). Protect nutrition in the first 10 weeks to maximise the peak.

OXYTOCIN LET-DOWN

Calf stimulation critical

Buffalo require calf presence or brief suckling before milking for complete oxytocin let-down. Skipping this step causes incomplete milking and rapid dry-off. Never use oxytocin injections routinely — it suppresses natural let-down.

PREMIUM MARKETS

Highest value per litre

Buffalo milk for desi ghee, dahi, makhan, or khoya commands a significant premium over processed cow milk. Test and document fat% to prove quality and negotiate better prices.

06 / HEALTH MANAGEMENT

Prevention protects
every litre.

Buffalo are generally hardy, but certain diseases are economically devastating in Pakistani conditions — especially HS, FMD, and Theileriosis.

Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS)

One of Pakistan's most economically devastating buffalo diseases. Caused by Pasteurella multocida. Vaccinate annually before monsoon (June). Outbreaks peak in monsoon season and during animal movement. Untreated, mortality can be rapid — within 24–48 hours of symptoms.

Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)

Buffalo are highly susceptible. Bivalent A+O vaccination every 6 months is mandatory. FMD causes acute milk drops and lameness. During outbreaks, biosecurity (no animal movement, disinfection at entry points) is critical.

Theileriosis & Liver Fluke

Theileriosis (tick-borne): regular acaricide dipping and tick control. Treatment: buparvaquone. Liver Fluke (Fasciolosis): common in irrigated areas; strategic triclabendazole deworming twice yearly prevents chronic production losses.

Halal & Withdrawal Compliance

Discard milk from antibiotic-treated animals for the full withdrawal period — a commercial and Islamic dietary obligation. Herd Manager's Health module automatically calculates withdrawal end dates and flags treated animals.

07 / HEAT & SEASONAL MANAGEMENT

More tolerant than HF —
but still needs a wallow.

Nili-Ravi buffalo handle Pakistan's heat better than imported cows, but without a wallow tank in summer you still lose 15–30% of milk yield.
WALLOW TANK — NON-NEGOTIABLE

Buffaloes have fewer sweat glands than cattle and rely on wallowing in water for thermoregulation. A wallow tank (3–5 m long × 1.5 m wide × 60–90 cm deep) per 15–20 animals is essential infrastructure — not optional.

"Garmi mein bhains ka talab zaroori hai — wallow tank se milk drop ruk sakti hai aur nasal ki takleef bhi kam hoti hai."

Summer Management Checklist

Wallow tank

3×1.5 m minimum per 15–20 animals. Change water every 2–3 days. Provide shade over the wallow.

Night feeding

Shift 60–70% of fodder/TMR to evening/night hours when temperatures drop.

Fan ventilation

High-volume axial fans above resting and feeding area. Critical in Punjab's 42–46°C summers.

Cool drinking water

Shade troughs or underground storage. Buffalo refuse warm water.

Open sheds only

Never house buffalo in closed metal-roof sheds in summer. Roof temperature can reach 55°C.

Electrolytes

Supplement potassium and sodium during heat waves to replace sweat losses.

08 / HOUSING & BATHAN DESIGN

From bathan
to commercial shed.

Whether you run a traditional Sindh bathan or a Punjab commercial farm — the right infrastructure makes management possible.

Housing Dimensions (Nili-Ravi)

Floor space (tethered)3.5–4.5 m²/animal
Floor space (loose)5–6 m²/animal
Shed eave heightMin 3.5 m (4.5 m in hot areas)
Feed bunk space0.8–1.0 m/animal
Wallow tank1 per 15–20 animals
Floor drainage slope2–3% (brushed concrete)

Flooring: Brushed concrete prevents slipping during mounting. Buffaloes on smooth floors risk serious hip injuries. Provide dry wheat straw bedding in resting areas.

COMMERCIAL

Loose-housing shed

Buffalo move freely between shed, wallow, feed bunk, and milking area. Allows individual monitoring, controlled feeding, and proper record-keeping. Recommended for 20+ buffalo operations.

TRADITIONAL

Kundi bathan (Sindh)

The migratory river-grazing system of Sindh. Kundi buffalo graze canal banks by day, return to mud enclosures by night. Low capital cost; unique to Sindh's bathandar culture. Limited individual management — but Herd Manager mobile still helps track milk and health per animal.

09 / BUFFALO DAIRY ACROSS PAKISTAN

Punjab, Sindh, KPK —
the buffalo belt.

Pakistan is the world's 3rd largest buffalo milk producer. Here is how the industry looks province by province.

Punjab — Nili-Ravi heartland

The Sahiwal-Okara-Faisalabad-Gujranwala belt has the world's highest density of quality Nili-Ravi buffalo. ~70% of Pakistan's buffalo milk production. Large commercial farms, government model farms, and smallholders co-exist. Key institutions: UVAS Lahore, NARC Islamabad.

Sindh — Kundi bathan country

Home to the Kundi buffalo and Pakistan's unique bathan system — migratory river-side grazing managed by bathandars. Peri-urban Karachi and Hyderabad dairies are growing commercially. Kundi milk has the highest fat% of any Pakistani buffalo breed.

Government support

UVAS, NARC, and PARC lead buffalo genetics and nutrition research. Provincial PPLDP/PSLDP schemes support breed improvement. Government semen banks provide Nili-Ravi and Murrah AI semen at subsidised rates — a major advantage for small farms.

11 / FARM ECONOMICS

50 buffalo. Serious
monthly margins.

Lower capital cost than HF, premium desi milk prices, and better heat tolerance — the buffalo economics case is compelling.

BUFFALO vs HF ECONOMICS

Lower capital cost, lower heat stress risk, better fibre feed efficiency, and desi milk premium make Nili-Ravi buffalo compelling for local market supply. HF wins on raw volume for processor contracts. Many successful Punjab farms run both.

Breed & Production

How much milk does a Nili-Ravi buffalo produce per day?+
A well-managed Nili-Ravi buffalo produces 10–18 litres at peak lactation, with 305-day totals of 2,500–4,000 kg. Elite animals on Punjab model farms exceed 4,500 kg. Milk fat is 6.0–7.5% — nearly double HF cow milk — making each litre significantly more valuable for desi ghee, yoghurt, and makhan production.
What is the price of a Nili-Ravi buffalo in Pakistan?+
Lactating Nili-Ravi buffalo (2025–26): PKR 150,000–350,000 depending on yield history, pedigree, and lactation stage. Pregnant heifers: PKR 120,000–250,000. Prices peak before Eid-ul-Adha for males and during peak milk season for females. Always demand brucellosis test certificate and verify yield records.
What is the difference between Nili-Ravi and Kundi buffalo?+
Nili-Ravi originates in Punjab's Ravi River belt — the premier commercial dairy buffalo with higher milk volume and excellent temperament for managed farms. Kundi is Sindh's dominant buffalo breed, adapted to the Indus floodplains and bathan system. Kundi has slightly higher fat% (6.5–8.0%) but lower milk volume. Nili-Ravi suits structured commercial farms; Kundi thrives in extensive/bathan farming in Sindh.

Breeding & Silent Heat

What is silent heat in buffalo and how do I detect it?+
Silent heat (sub-oestrus) means the buffalo ovulates but shows no visible heat signs — affecting 40–60% of oestrus events in Nili-Ravi buffalo. Detection methods: (1) Teaser bull — most reliable; (2) Tail chalk — rubbed-off chalk indicates mounting; (3) Twice-daily visual observation at cool times; (4) Milk progesterone testing; (5) Ultrasound by a vet. Use Ovsynch/CIDR protocols to breed without relying on visual heat detection.
What is the gestation period of a buffalo?+
The gestation period of the Nili-Ravi buffalo is 305–320 days, averaging 310 days — approximately 28 days longer than cattle (282 days). Record the AI date in Herd Manager and it automatically calculates the expected calving date using the 310-day buffalo gestation calendar.
What is the calving interval target for Nili-Ravi buffalo?+
The target calving interval is 420–450 days (14–15 months). Most Pakistani farms average 540–600 days (18–20 months). Closing this gap — through Ovsynch/CIDR protocols, post-calving nutrition (BCS 3.0–3.5), and wallow tank access — is the single biggest opportunity for improving buffalo herd profitability.
How do I use Ovsynch protocol for buffalo?+
Modified Ovsynch for buffalo: Day 0 — GnRH; Day 7 — PGF2α; Day 9 — GnRH; Day 10 — Fixed-time AI. Conception rate: 45–55% in well-managed herds. For summer use, precede with a CIDR device (inserted Day 0, removed Day 7) to improve response in seasonally anoestrous buffalo. Herd Manager's Breeding module tracks every step automatically.

Feeding & Health

What is the best feed for Nili-Ravi buffalo in Pakistan?+
Best base fodder: green berseem (Oct–Apr), maize silage (year-round if stored). Best protein: cotton seed cake (binola khal), 1.5–2.5 kg/day. Energy supplement: wheat bran (chokar) + molasses. Salt lick and mineral block: ad libitum. Year-round silage is the single most impactful feeding upgrade — it eliminates the feast-famine cycle that causes dramatic seasonal milk drops on traditional farms.
How do I improve milk yield in my Nili-Ravi buffalo?+
Key interventions: (1) Structured TMR or concentrate feeding — adds 20–35% yield vs ad-hoc. (2) Year-round green fodder or silage. (3) Improve calving interval — early-lactation cows produce more. (4) Wallow tank access in summer. (5) Maintain BCS 3.0–3.5 at calving. Track yield per buffalo daily in Herd Manager's Milk module.
What vaccines do Nili-Ravi buffalo need in Pakistan?+
Mandatory: FMD bivalent A+O every 6 months (March & September), Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS) annually before monsoon (June — critical), Black Quarter annually. Recommended: Brucellosis for heifers once (4–8 months), Anthrax in endemic areas. Follow NARC and provincial livestock department vaccination calendars and track due dates in Herd Manager Health module.
What causes retained placenta in buffalo?+
Retained placenta (failure to expel within 24 hours) is more common in buffalo than cattle. Causes: selenium and vitamin E deficiency, dystocia (difficult calving), twin births, infections. Prevention: selenium/vitamin E supplementation in the last 4–6 weeks of pregnancy, avoid over-conditioning at dry-off, maintain good BCS. Call a vet if placenta retained beyond 24 hours — do not manually remove by force.

Housing & Management

What is a wallow tank and why is it important?+
A wallow tank is a shallow water pool (60–90 cm deep) for buffalo thermoregulation. Unlike cattle, buffaloes have low sweat gland density and rely on wallowing to cool down. Without a wallow tank in Pakistan's summer, buffalo suffer severe heat stress — reducing milk yield 15–30% and suppressing reproductive activity. Minimum size: 3×1.5 m per 15–20 animals. Change water every 2–3 days.
How many times should buffalo be milked per day?+
Twice daily (2×) at 12-hour intervals is standard commercial practice. Buffalo require calf presence or brief suckling before milking for complete oxytocin let-down — this is more critical in buffalo than cattle. Consistent milking times and routine are essential; disrupting the routine causes immediate yield drops in buffalo.

Software & Profitability

What is the best dairy management software for buffalo farms in Pakistan?+
HerdManager.co is the best dairy management system in Pakistan for Nili-Ravi and Kundi buffalo farms. It has specific features for buffalo: silent heat logging, Ovsynch/CIDR protocol tracking, 310-day buffalo gestation calculator, HS/FMD vaccination alerts, Halal withdrawal tracking, and AI Assistant in Urdu and Roman Urdu. Mobile-first, WhatsApp support, Pakistani feedstuff database.
Is buffalo farming more profitable than HF cow farming?+
Depends on your market. For desi milk (doodh dukan, ghee, yoghurt, makhan): buffalo wins — higher fat%, premium price per litre, lower feed cost per litre, lower heat stress risk. For formal processor supply (Nestlé, Engro): HF wins on raw volume. Many successful Punjab commercial farms run both — HF for processor contracts, Nili-Ravi for premium desi markets. See our Holstein-Friesian guide →
What is the startup cost for a 50-buffalo dairy farm in Pakistan?+
A 50-buffalo commercial operation requires approximately PKR 16–30 million in total investment: buffalo (Rs 10–17.5M) + shed and wallow infrastructure (Rs 3–6M) + equipment (Rs 1–2.5M) + working capital (Rs 2–3.5M). Monthly margins on a well-managed 50-buffalo farm can reach Rs 1.3–1.5 million. Payback period: 3–5 years.
Can I manage my buffalo farm on a mobile phone?+
Yes. HerdManager.co has a full mobile interface and dedicated Android/iOS app — all data entry, alerts, and reports on any smartphone. The AI Assistant answers questions in Urdu, Roman Urdu, and English. WhatsApp support at +92 339 111 0024. Offline mode available for areas with poor connectivity.
What is buffalo milk fat percentage in Pakistan?+
Nili-Ravi buffalo milk fat: 6.0–7.5%. Kundi buffalo: 6.5–8.0%. This is nearly double the fat content of Holstein-Friesian cow milk (3.5–4.0%), making buffalo milk Pakistan's most valued raw material for desi ghee (Rs 2,000–3,500/kg retail), yoghurt, makhan, khoya, and paneer.
