Typical error: about ±5–10% of scale weight
Schaeffer's formula: Girth² × Length ÷ 300
Useful for Mandi, Qurbani & dose estimates — weigh when it must be exact

Want to keep weight records for your whole herd?

Herd Manager records weights for any animal and exports weight-gain reports. It works out calf average daily gain with on-track and below-target badges, reminds you to weigh heifers every 60 days, and shows in-app alerts when vaccinations and deworming are due.

Veterinary Measurement Protocol

How to Correctly Measure Cattle & Buffalo Weight

Ensure the animal is standing square on flat ground with head upright. Improper standing posture can cause an error of 10–15 kg.

1

Heart Girth (سینے کا گھیراو)

Wrap a tailor's measuring tape completely around the animal's chest, directly behind the front elbow joints and shoulder blades (withers).

Tip: The tape should be pulled snug against the hide without depressing the flesh. Take the measurement while the animal exhales.
2

Body Length (جسم کی لمبائی)

Measure a straight line from the point of the shoulder (scapula/shoulder joint) to the point of the buttock / pin bone (tuber ischii near the tail head).

Tip: Do not measure over the curves of the back. Keep the tape straight along the side of the animal.
3

Schaeffer's Mathematical Formula

Weight (lbs) = (Girth² × Length) ÷ 300

Measure in inches. To convert into kilograms, divide pounds by 2.20462. The same formula is used for every species. It was developed for cattle, so buffalo, goat and sheep results are rougher.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the animal type. It sets the carcass percentage and the feed-intake estimate; the weight formula is the same for every type.
  2. Choose inches or centimetres for your tape.
  3. With the animal standing square on level ground, measure the heart girth just behind the front legs and the body length from the point of the shoulder to the pin bone, as shown above, and enter both figures.
  4. The results update as you type. Use Share on WhatsApp to send them.

Reading the result

The live weight is shown in kilograms, maunds (40 kg each) and pounds. For an adult animal measured carefully, expect it to be within about 5–10% of a scale weight; young, pregnant, very thin or very fat animals, and buffalo, goats and sheep, can be further off. The carcass figure is the bone-in weight at a typical dressing percentage for the animal type you chose, and boneless meat is roughly 65–70% of that. The dry matter intake is a rough daily figure based on body weight alone; milking animals eat more and dry animals less. The dosage bracket is simply the 50 kg weight band the animal falls in. Always take the dose from the product label or your vet, and weigh the animal when the dose must be exact.

بغیر کانٹے کے گائے اور بھینس کا وزن معلوم کرنے کا طریقہ

Bila Kanta Gaye aur Bhains Ka Wazan Maloom Karne Ka Asan Formula (Schaeffer's Method)

وزن معلوم کرنے کا مرحلہ وار طریقہ (In Urdu)

(Qurbani & Mandi)

FAQ

Common questions about animal weight estimation

Everything you need to know about Schaeffer's formula and livestock body mass estimation.

How do I calculate cow or buffalo weight without a scale?

Use Schaeffer's formula. Measure the heart girth (around the chest just behind the front legs) and the body length (point of the shoulder to the pin bone) in inches. Multiply girth × girth × length and divide by 300 to get the weight in pounds, then divide by 2.20462 for kilograms, or by 88.18 for maunds (1 maund = 40 kg). Expect an error of about 5–10%. The formula was developed for cattle, so buffalo results are rougher.

How accurate is Schaeffer's formula for cattle and buffalo weight?

Measured carefully on a level floor, heart-girth formulas like Schaeffer's are usually within about 5–10% of scale weight for adult cattle. Errors are larger for young, pregnant, very fat or very thin animals, and for buffalo, goats and sheep, which the formula was not developed for. Use a scale when the exact weight matters, such as selling by weight.

How much meat (carcass dressing percentage) does a cow or buffalo yield?

Carcass weight is meat plus bone, after removing the skin, head, feet and organs. It is usually about 50–55% of live weight in healthy cattle. Well-fattened bulls can reach 55–60%, while older dairy cows and buffaloes are often 45–50%. Boneless meat is roughly 65–70% of the carcass weight. For example, a 400 kg animal at 50–55% gives roughly 200–220 kg of bone-in carcass (5–5.5 maunds), or about 130–155 kg of boneless meat.

How do I convert Maund (من) into Kilograms?

In Pakistan, India, and South Asia, 1 standard Maund (من) equals exactly 40 Kilograms. For example, a 480 kg bull is exactly 12 Maunds.

Why is accurate animal weight necessary for deworming and medicine?

Many veterinary medicines, including dewormers and antibiotics, are dosed by body weight, as set out on the product label. Under-dosing can leave the treatment ineffective and helps parasites and bacteria become resistant, while overdosing can cause side effects or toxicity. A tape estimate can be 5–10% off, so ask your vet how to round the dose, and weigh the animal for drugs with a narrow safety margin.

Decision support only. Not a substitute for your veterinarian.
