Pakistan's milk comes
from the buffalo. Manage it right.
The Nili-Ravi and Kundi buffalo produce over 60% of Pakistan's total milk supply. This guide covers everything — feeding, silent heat detection, Ovsynch breeding, health, housing, and the digital tools that separate a profitable bathan from a struggling one.
Nili-Ravi Buffalo Management: The Nili-Ravi buffalo is Pakistan's premier dairy breed, producing 2,500–4,000 kg of milk per 305-day lactation in well-managed herds, with 6.0–7.5% butterfat. Successful commercial management needs structured roughage-based feeding (dry matter intake of about 3% of body weight), a wallow tank for cooling, and a plan for silent heat (40–60% of heats are missed) using a teaser bull, Ovsynch protocols and good breeding records.
| Production Metric | Target (well-managed herd) | Pakistan Traditional Avg | How Herd Manager Helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 305-Day Milk Yield | 2,500 – 4,000 Litres | 1,800 – 2,200 Litres | Per-animal milk records and lactation curves with peak yield |
| Butterfat Percentage | 6.0% – 7.5% | Varies with feeding & stage of lactation | Record fat/SNF from buyer statements and reconcile payments |
| Gestation Period | About 310 Days (305–320) | Often not recorded | Breeding records and pregnancy-check reminders |
| Missed (Silent) Heats | Teaser bull + Ovsynch/CIDR for problem breeders | 40% – 60% of heats missed | Heat log, heat-expected alerts and sync-protocol dose reminders |

Pakistan's buffalo, covered.
Pakistan's national
dairy buffalo.
The Nili-Ravi is Pakistan's national dairy buffalo and one of the highest-yielding river buffalo breeds in the world. Named after the Nili Bar (the blue-green waters of the Ravi riverbed) and the Ravi River itself, it originated in the Sahiwal-Montgomery belt of central Punjab and has been selectively bred for milk production over centuries.
Its milk fat percentage of 6.0–7.5% is the defining commercial advantage — nearly double that of Holstein-Friesian cow milk (3.5–4.0%). This rich, thick milk is Pakistan's preferred raw material for desi ghee, yoghurt (dahi), makhan, khoya, paneer, and chai. In the local market, buffalo milk commands a significant premium over processed cow milk.
The Nili-Ravi is recognised by its distinctive curly tail switch with a white tip, massive udder, broad forehead, and calm temperament. It is highly adaptable to managed farm conditions and responds excellently to routine — making it suitable for both traditional smallholder management and modern commercial operations.
"Pakistan ka asli doodh bhains se aata hai — Nili-Ravi aur Kundi bhains Pakistan ki dairy industry ki reeh ki haddi hain."

Buffalo vs HF: HF produces 3× more raw milk volume, but buffalo milk has nearly 2× higher fat. For desi ghee, yoghurt, and makhan markets, buffalo wins on value per litre. For formal processor volume contracts, HF wins. Many commercial farms in Punjab run both — HF for processors, buffalo for premium desi markets. See our Holstein-Friesian Management Guide →
Structured feeding adds
20–35% more milk.
Dry Matter Intake
A lactating Nili-Ravi needs 2.8–3.2% of body weight in DM daily. For a 500 kg buffalo: 14–16 kg DM. Buffalo are more efficient fibre converters than cattle — they extract more energy from wheat straw and poor-quality roughage.
Water Requirements
A lactating buffalo drinks 60–90 litres per day. In summer, canal or wallow tank access is critical for both hydration and thermoregulation. Farms with wallow tanks consistently report higher summer milk yields.
Seasonal Fodder Calendar
Rabi (Oct–Mar): Berseem + lucerne + wheat straw — the best season for buffalo nutrition. Kharif (Apr–Sep): Maize/sorghum silage + green maize. Silage bridging the lean season is the single biggest production upgrade available.
Income Over Feed Cost
At 12 L × Rs 160/L = Rs 1,920/day revenue minus Rs 400–500 feed cost = Rs 1,420–1,520 IOFC/buffalo/day. Herd Manager's feed plans show each pen's feed cost per litre, and our free IOFC calculator works out the full figure.

The challenge that costs
Pakistani farmers billions.
- Seasonal anoestrus — short-day breeders cycle less in summer
- Nutritional anoestrus — underfed buffalo don't cycle post-calving
- Post-partum interval — naturally longer (60–90 days) than cattle
- Stress suppression — heat, overcrowding, poor water access

Ovsynch Protocol for Buffalo
Summer tip: Add CIDR device on D0, remove on D7 to improve response in seasonally anoestrous buffalo.
Seasonal Breeding Calendar
The richest milk
in any dairy breed.
Peak at 6–10 weeks
Buffalo peak later than cattle (6–10 vs 4–6 weeks) but the decline is slower (6–8% per month vs 8–10%). Protect nutrition in the first 10 weeks to maximise the peak.
Calf stimulation critical
Buffalo require calf presence or brief suckling before milking for complete oxytocin let-down. Skipping this step causes incomplete milking and rapid dry-off. Never use oxytocin injections routinely — it suppresses natural let-down.
Highest value per litre
Buffalo milk for desi ghee, dahi, makhan, or khoya commands a significant premium over processed cow milk. Test and document fat% to prove quality and negotiate better prices.
Buffalo Milk Quality vs Cow Milk
Prevention protects
every litre.
Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS)
One of Pakistan's most economically devastating buffalo diseases. Caused by Pasteurella multocida. Vaccinate annually before monsoon (June). Outbreaks peak in monsoon season and during animal movement. Untreated, mortality can be rapid — within 24–48 hours of symptoms.
Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)
Buffalo are highly susceptible. Vaccinate every 6 months with a trivalent vaccine (types O, A and Asia-1, which circulate in Pakistan). FMD causes acute milk drops and lameness. During outbreaks, biosecurity (no animal movement, disinfection at entry points) is critical.
Theileriosis & Liver Fluke
Theileriosis (tick-borne): regular acaricide dipping and tick control. Treatment: buparvaquone. Liver Fluke (Fasciolosis): common in irrigated areas; strategic triclabendazole deworming twice yearly prevents chronic production losses.
Milk Withdrawal Periods
Keep milk from treated animals out of the tank for the full withdrawal period on the product label (ask your vet if unsure) — buyers test for residues. In Herd Manager's Health module you set a withdrawal period on each medicine; when it is given, the app shows a daily Milk Withdrawal Active alert until the safe date.

More tolerant than HF —
but still needs a wallow.
Buffaloes have fewer sweat glands than cattle and rely on wallowing in water for thermoregulation. A wallow tank (3–5 m long × 1.5 m wide × 60–90 cm deep) per 15–20 animals is essential infrastructure — not optional.
"Garmi mein bhains ka talab zaroori hai — wallow tank se milk drop ruk sakti hai aur nasal ki takleef bhi kam hoti hai."
Buffalo vs HF in Summer Heat
| FACTOR | BUFFALO | HF COW |
|---|---|---|
| Stress threshold (THI) | ~78 | ~68 |
| Yield drop at THI 85 | −10 to −20% | −20 to −35% |
| Cooling method | Wallowing | Soaker fans |
Summer Management Checklist
3×1.5 m minimum per 15–20 animals. Change water every 2–3 days. Provide shade over the wallow.
Shift 60–70% of fodder/TMR to evening/night hours when temperatures drop.
High-volume axial fans above resting and feeding area. Critical in Punjab's 42–46°C summers.
Shade troughs or underground storage. Buffalo refuse warm water.
Never house buffalo in closed metal-roof sheds in summer. Roof temperature can reach 55°C.
Supplement potassium and sodium during heat waves to replace sweat losses.
From bathan
to commercial shed.
Housing Dimensions (Nili-Ravi)
| Floor space (tethered) | 3.5–4.5 m²/animal |
| Floor space (loose) | 5–6 m²/animal |
| Shed eave height | Min 3.5 m (4.5 m in hot areas) |
| Feed bunk space | 0.8–1.0 m/animal |
| Wallow tank | 1 per 15–20 animals |
| Floor drainage slope | 2–3% (brushed concrete) |
Flooring: Brushed concrete prevents slipping during mounting. Buffaloes on smooth floors risk serious hip injuries. Provide dry wheat straw bedding in resting areas.
Loose-housing shed
Buffalo move freely between shed, wallow, feed bunk, and milking area. Allows individual monitoring, controlled feeding, and proper record-keeping. Recommended for 20+ buffalo operations.
Kundi bathan (Sindh)
The migratory river-grazing system of Sindh. Kundi buffalo graze canal banks by day, return to mud enclosures by night. Low capital cost; unique to Sindh's bathandar culture. Limited individual management — but Herd Manager on a phone browser still helps track milk and health per animal.
Punjab, Sindh, KPK —
the buffalo belt.
Punjab — Nili-Ravi heartland
The Sahiwal-Okara-Faisalabad-Gujranwala belt has the highest concentration of quality Nili-Ravi buffalo. ~70% of Pakistan's buffalo milk production. Large commercial farms, government model farms, and smallholders co-exist. Key institutions: UVAS Lahore, NARC Islamabad.
Sindh — Kundi bathan country
Home to the Kundi buffalo and Pakistan's unique bathan system — migratory river-side grazing managed by bathandars. Peri-urban Karachi and Hyderabad dairies are growing commercially. Kundi milk has the highest fat% of any Pakistani buffalo breed.
Government support
UVAS, NARC, and PARC lead buffalo genetics and nutrition research. Provincial PPLDP/PSLDP schemes support breed improvement. Government semen banks provide Nili-Ravi and Murrah AI semen at subsidised rates — a major advantage for small farms.
Pakistan's #1 dairy software —
for buffalo farms too.
Breeding & Heat Records
Log every heat — including silent heats found by a teaser bull or your vet — and get a heat-expected alert 21 days later. Schedule Ovsynch, CoSynch, Presynch and other sync protocols with dose reminders, and see conception rate by animal, bull/semen, month and season.
Milk Recording
Record milk per buffalo for morning, afternoon and evening sessions, or upload a day's milk from Excel. Per-animal lactation curves show peak yield and days in milk, with alerts for sudden milk drops.
Health Tracking
Vaccination and deworming due/overdue alerts for the schedule you set (HS, FMD and more). Set a withdrawal period on each medicine and get a daily Milk Withdrawal Active alert until the safe date. Log health events such as retained placenta.
Feed Formulation
Check a ration built from the feeds you use — berseem, maize silage, binola khal, chokar, molasses — against NRC-based nutrient requirements. Per-pen feeding plans show estimated daily feed cost per animal and feed cost per litre.
Farm Accounts
Record milk sales to doodh dukan, ghee processor or retail customers and every feed and medicine purchase, then run income and expense reports with customer and vendor ledgers.
AI Farm Assistant
Ask questions about your own herd, milk, breeding, stock and finance records — the assistant (powered by DeepSeek) reads your farm data to answer. The app is in English, but you can ask in Urdu or Roman Urdu and it will usually reply in kind.
Buffalo calving dates: the app currently uses cattle gestation (283 days) for expected-calving dates and calving alerts, and will not accept a calving more than 295 days after the recorded breeding. Plan buffalo calvings on about 310 days with our free cow & buffalo gestation calculator.
Roman Urdu: "Herd Manager mein bhains ka doodh, sehat, aur nasal — sab kuch mobile par. Koi register nahin, koi hisaab bhoolna nahin."
50 buffalo. Serious
monthly margins.
Monthly P&L — 50 Buffalo in Milk
This is a cash margin for a month when all 50 buffalo are in milk, before loan repayments, depreciation and replacement animals. Across a full year, dry periods and calving gaps pull the average well below this figure — which is why payback on the capital below is typically 3–5 years.
50 Nili-Ravi buffalo: Rs 10M–17.5M
Shed + wallow + infrastructure: Rs 3M–6M
Equipment (milking, TMR): Rs 1M–2.5M
Working capital (6 months): Rs 2M–3.5M
Lower capital cost, lower heat stress risk, better fibre feed efficiency, and desi milk premium make Nili-Ravi buffalo compelling for local market supply. HF wins on raw volume for processor contracts. Many successful Punjab farms run both.
10 steps to your
first buffalo herd.
Land & water access
Minimum 1.5–2 acres per 20 buffalo. Water access (canal or bore well) is non-negotiable. Plan wallow tank site from day one.
Shed & wallow construction
Open-sided loose-housing shed with brushed concrete floor (2–3% slope). Wallow tank: 3×1.5×0.8 m per 15–20 animals. Shade over the wallow.
Source quality Nili-Ravi buffalo
Purchase from reputable breeders or government nucleus farms. Mandatory brucellosis test. Pregnancy-test all females before purchase. Verify curly tail switch and udder conformation.
Set up feeding system
Establish berseem/maize cultivation plan for year-round green fodder OR set up silage bunker. Source binola khal, chokar, and molasses suppliers. Build covered feed storage.
Establish milking routine
Twice daily at fixed 12-hour intervals. Train staff on calf stimulation for let-down. Teat pre- and post-dip protocol. Never inject oxytocin routinely.
Implement veterinary programme
FMD every 6 months, HS pre-monsoon, brucellosis testing, liver fluke deworming twice yearly, acaricide/tick control programme.
Set up breeding programme
Establish teaser bull or AI service contact. Begin Ovsynch/CIDR for summer breeding. Record BCS at every calving (target 3.0–3.5).
Set up Herd Manager
Request access at herdmanager.co and our team sets up your farm account. Add your sheds and every buffalo (breed "Other"), then start recording daily milk, health and breeding from day one. The app uses cattle gestation, so plan buffalo calving dates on about 310 days with our free gestation calculator.
Establish milk market
Identify local doodh dukan, ghee processor, or direct retail buyer. Test milk fat% and document to negotiate quality premium pricing.
Review KPIs monthly
Calving interval, average yield per buffalo, conception rate and feed cost per litre (work out IOFC with our free IOFC calculator). Use Herd Manager's dashboard and reports to spot your lowest producers.
