How to Improve Your Margin Per Liter of Milk

Three habits that help dairy farms in Pakistan and worldwide keep more of their milk income.

1

Watch the Feed-to-Revenue Ratio

Feed is usually the biggest cost on a dairy farm. A common rule of thumb is to keep total daily feed (wanda + silage + hay) at around half of milk sales or less. Above about 60%, little is left for labor, health and loan payments. Mixing your own wanda can lower the ratio when local ingredient prices allow. Check with the Wanda calculator.

2

Find "Passenger" (Loss-Making) Animals

Low-yielding cows and repeat-breeder buffaloes can eat as much wanda as your best milkers. Use your milk and breeding records to find them, then decide whether to treat, re-breed, or cull. Removing loss-making animals raises the herd's margin per liter.

3

Direct Consumer / Hotel Selling

Selling directly to households, tea hotels and sweet shops usually pays more per liter than selling to a middleman (dodhi / village milk collector). It also adds delivery time, transport cost and payment-collection risk. Put both prices into the calculator to see the real difference.

How to use this calculator

  1. Load one of the example farms to see how the calculator works, or start straight away with your own figures.
  2. Choose your currency. Enter the number of milking animals, the liters of milk you sell per day and the price you receive per liter.
  3. Enter your daily feed costs: concentrates (wanda and oilseed cake) and green fodder, silage or hay.
  4. Enter daily labor, electricity and fuel, vet and breeding costs, and other costs such as feed for dry animals, rent, loan payments and replacement animals. For a monthly bill, divide it by 30.
  5. The results update as you type. Use Share Profit Report on WhatsApp to send a summary.

Reading the result

Daily margin is your milk income minus every cost you entered, and the monthly margin is that figure times 30. Margin per liter spreads the daily margin over the liters sold. The break-even milk price is your total daily cost divided by the liters sold: the lowest price that covers the costs entered. Break-even volume is how many liters you would need to sell each day at your current price. The feed-cost ratio shows how much of your milk income goes on feed: about half or less is good, 50–60% is worth watching, and above 60% leaves little for other costs. The result only covers the costs you enter, so leaving out dry animals, young stock, loan payments or your own labor makes the margin look better than it really is.

Dairy Farm Daily Profit and Loss Calculation Formula (in Urdu)

(The Golden Equation)

(Common Mistakes)

FAQ

Common questions about dairy farm profitability

Everything you need to know about calculating cost of milk production, margins, and break-even points.

How do I calculate daily profit on a dairy farm?

Multiply the liters of milk sold per day by the price per liter to get gross revenue. Then subtract all daily costs: wanda, silage or green fodder, labor wages, electricity and fuel, veterinary costs, and other costs such as dry animals' feed, rent and loan payments. What is left is your daily margin.

What is a healthy profit per liter of milk in Pakistan?

There is no single figure. It depends on your milk price, feed prices, yield per animal, and which costs you count. Include dry animals, rent, loan payments, and replacement animals. Then track your margin per liter month by month and compare it with your own past results.

What is the break-even milk price?

The break-even price is what it costs you to produce one liter of milk (total daily costs ÷ liters sold per day). Selling milk below your break-even price results in operating losses.

What percentage of milk revenue should feed costs be?

A common rule of thumb is to keep feed costs (concentrates, roughages, and silage) at around half of milk income or less. Above about 60%, there is usually little left for labor, health costs, and loan payments.
