How to Make 18% Crude Protein (CP) Wanda at Home

Complete guide to balancing energy grains, protein oilseed meals, buffers, and essential macro minerals.

1. Energy Sources (about 55–65%)

Rumen microbes need fermentable carbohydrates to synthesize microbial protein.

  • Maize / Corn (Makki): 8.5–9% CP, 88% TDN. Primary starch source.
  • Wheat Bran (Choker): 14–15% CP, high palatable fiber.
  • Rice Polish: 12–13% CP, 12% ether extract (fat for energy).

2. Protein Meals (30–40%)

Drives milk production, milk protein percentage, and body tissue maintenance.

  • Canola Meal: 35–37% CP. Excellent amino acid balance and cost.
  • Cottonseed Cake (Banola): 20–22% CP. Traditional dairy favorite.
  • Soybean Meal: 44–46% CP. High-quality protein, but usually costly.

3. Minerals & Buffers (3–5%)

A buffer helps keep the rumen stable on grain-rich rations, and minerals support bones, milk production and fertility.

  • Sodium Bicarbonate (Meetha Soda): 1% (helps buffer the rumen).
  • Mineral Premix (DCP / Trace Minerals): 2% (calcium & phosphorus).
  • Feed Salt (Namak): 1% (sodium & chloride electrolyte balance).

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick a preset (18%, 16%, 14% or 20% CP) as a starting recipe. Each one is a 100 kg batch you can change.
  2. Choose your currency, then type today's price per kg for each ingredient.
  3. Change the kg of any ingredient, remove a row with the bin icon, or add another ingredient from the list below the table. If you have a lab test for an ingredient, type its CP and TDN over the typical values.
  4. Set your bag size and the price of a market wanda bag of the same size, so the calculator can compare the two.
  5. The results update as you type. Use Share Recipe on WhatsApp to send the recipe and its figures.

Reading the result

Crude protein (CP) is the protein share of the finished mix. Check it against the target for the animals you feed; the line under the figure gives a rough guide. TDN is an estimate of energy, and a mix below about 70% TDN is low in energy. Cost per kg and per bag come from the batch weight and the prices you entered, and the savings box compares your bag with the market bag. A home mix that is cheaper but lower in CP or energy is not a real saving, so compare like with like. Remember that wanda is only part of the ration: the right CP level also depends on the green fodder and silage fed with it.

گھر پر ونڈا بنانے کے 3 بڑے فائدے (Benefits)

FAQ

Common questions about wanda formulation

Everything you need to know about calculating crude protein, mixing costs, and commercial wanda comparison.

What Crude Protein (CP%) is required for milking cows vs buffaloes?

High-yielding dairy cows (producing >20 liters) usually get a concentrate feed with 18% to 19% Crude Protein. Standard lactating cows and water buffaloes (10–18 liters) usually do well on a 16% to 17% CP wanda. Dry pregnant cows need about 13% to 14% CP. The right level also depends on the protein in your green fodder and silage.

How do I calculate the Crude Protein (CP%) of dairy feed?

Multiply the kilograms of each ingredient by its crude protein percentage, add the results together, and divide by the total batch weight in kg. For example, 30 kg of maize at 8.8% CP adds 2.64 kg of protein to the batch. The calculator above does this for you using typical ingredient values.

What is a typical 18% CP wanda recipe for cows in Pakistan?

An example 100 kg batch with about 18% CP (using typical ingredient values): 30 kg maize, 23 kg canola meal, 20 kg wheat bran (choker), 15 kg cottonseed cake (banola), 8 kg rice polish, 2 kg mineral premix, 1 kg sodium bicarbonate (meetha soda) and 1 kg salt. Ingredient quality varies, so check the result in the calculator with your own ingredients and prices.

How much wanda should be fed per liter of milk produced?

As a standard rule of thumb for cows: feed 1 kg of 18% CP wanda for every 2.5 to 3 liters of milk produced (plus 1.5–2 kg for body maintenance). For water buffaloes with high milk fat (6.5%–7.5%): feed 1 kg of wanda for every 2 to 2.2 liters of milk produced.

Why add Meetha Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) to wanda?

Grain-rich rations ferment quickly and produce acids in the rumen. When rumen pH stays below about 5.8 for long periods, animals can develop sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA), which lowers appetite and milk fat. Around 1% sodium bicarbonate in the wanda helps buffer the rumen. It does not replace enough long fibre (straw, hay or green fodder) in the ration.

How much can I save by making wanda at home?

It depends on your local ingredient and feed prices. Enter today's prices and the market bag price above to see the difference per bag. Remember to count mixing labour, transport, and storage losses too.
