Year-round high-energy forage —
the science of corn silage.

Silage is the foundational energy source for high-yielding dairy herds. Master maize harvesting maturity, bunker compaction dynamics, fermentation chemistry, mycotoxin prevention, and the Pakistan 365-day green fodder calendar.

Summary: Quality corn silage production in Pakistan requires harvesting at 32–35% Dry Matter (1/2 milk line), 12–19 mm chop length, rapid bunker packing with heavy tractors (>225 kg DM/m³ density), bacterial inoculation, and double-barrier airtight sealing to achieve a stable pH <4.0. Track silage and other feed stock with HerdManager.co.

SECTION 01 / HARVEST & FERMENTATION

The Science of Corn Silage Fermentation

Ensiling is an anaerobic bacterial preservation process. Epiphytic and inoculated lactic acid bacteria ferment water-soluble carbohydrates (sugars) into lactic acid, dropping the pH rapidly to inhibit enterobacteria, clostridia, and yeasts.

1. Kernel Processing & Chop Length

Aim to crack or crush every corn kernel, ideally into at least 4 pieces, during harvesting. Whole uncracked kernels pass through the ruminant digestive tract undigested, wasting expensive grain starch.

2. Compaction & Density Target

Tractors should pack continuously across the entire bunker face. A common rule of thumb is about 400 kg of packing-tractor weight for every tonne of fresh crop delivered per hour (the “800 lb per ton” rule) to squeeze out trapped oxygen pockets.

3. Fermentation Stabilizers & Inoculants

Heterofermentative strains (L. buchneri) produce moderate acetic acid which inhibits aerobic yeast growth upon silo opening, helping prevent heating at the feed face and in the bunk during hot Pakistani summers.

SECTION 02 / PAKISTAN FODDER CALENDAR

Annual 365-Day Forage Production Calendar

To avoid seasonal "fodder scarcity" periods (May–June and October–November), commercial farms combine preserved corn silage with seasonal high-protein legumes and grasses.

Crop Name Season Crude Protein (CP %) Role in Dairy Ration
Berseem Clover (Egyptian Clover) Rabi (Nov – May) 18% – 20% Primary winter succulent protein forage. 5–6 cuts.
Lucerne / Alfalfa Perennial (Year-round) 20% – 22% Premium hay & green chop, rich in calcium and lysine.
Fodder Maize (Spring & Autumn) Kharif & Spring 8% – 10% (68% TDN) Core energy source for corn silage production.
Sorghum-Sudan Hybrid (Sadabahar) Kharif (May – Oct) 10% – 12% High-biomass multi-cut summer grass. Drought resistant.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Silage & Forage Q&A

What is the ideal moisture level for corn silage in Pakistan?

The ideal dry matter is 32% to 35% (65% to 68% moisture). Harvesting too wet (<30% DM) causes clostridial fermentation and effluent runoff; harvesting too dry (>38% DM) prevents adequate compaction and leads to mold/heating.

How can dairy farms prevent Aflatoxin M1 in milk from silage and feed?

Aflatoxin M1 appears in milk when cows eat feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1, which is produced by Aspergillus moulds. To keep it out of silage: pack each bunker quickly (within about 48 hours), seal it airtight with a double sheet, use a proven inoculant, keep a clean vertical feedout face and discard mouldy surface layers. Where your nutritionist advises, add a toxin binder (aluminosilicate clay or yeast cell wall) to the TMR. Grains and oil cakes are common aflatoxin sources too, so check concentrates as well as silage.

How many kg of silage does a dairy cow consume per day in Pakistan?

A lactating Holstein or crossbred cow giving about 20–25 litres a day typically consumes 20–25 kg of corn silage daily (approx 7–8 kg Dry Matter) alongside 2–3 kg dry wheat straw (bhoosa) or alfalfa hay and 8–10 kg balanced concentrate (wanda).

What causes silage to turn dark brown and smell like tobacco?

This indicates heat damage (Maillard reaction) caused by trapped oxygen during poor compaction or inadequate sealing. The protein becomes bound to fiber (ADICP), drastically reducing digestible protein availability.

How does HerdManager.co help manage feed stock and silage reserves?

HerdManager.co keeps a running stock balance for each feed, including silage: stock you receive is added in batches, the feed you record each day is deducted, and the app alerts you when a feed falls to its minimum level, runs out, or has a batch close to expiry. It also reminds you when a day's feed use has not been recorded, so stock and feed cost stay accurate.
