GENETICS & BENCHMARKING / BREED GUIDE

Seven dairy breeds,
compared side by side.

Side-by-side benchmarks for 7 dairy cattle and water buffalo breeds and crosses. Compare 305-day yields, butterfat and protein, heat-stress thresholds and target calving intervals for South Asian climates — then see which breed fits your farm model.

Summary: Selecting the right dairy breed means balancing milk volume (Holstein 8,000+ L), milk fat (Nili-Ravi 6.8–7.8%, Jersey 4.8–5.4%), and hot-climate resilience (Sahiwal THI 80, F1 Crossbred THI 78). Keep records for any cattle breed or crossbred herd in HerdManager.co.

SECTION 02 / BREED SELECTION GUIDE

Which Breed Fits Your Farm Model?

Model A: High-Tech Enterprise

Best with Purebred Holstein-Friesian. Requires investment in freestall barns with sandwich panel roofs, soak-and-fan cooling, and TMR mixing wagons.

Target: 25–32 Liters/cow/day

Model B: Semi-Intensive Climate Resilient

Best with F1 Crossbred (Sahiwal × HF) or Jersey Cross. Excellent heat resistance, lower vet expenses, high fertility, and solid butterfat (4.2%).

Target: 18–24 Liters/cow/day

Model C: Premium Fat & Doddhi Milk

Best with Nili-Ravi or Murrah Buffaloes. Highest consumer price per liter in urban Pakistani retail due to 7.0%+ butterfat and rich texture.

Target: 10–14 Liters/buffalo/day
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Breed Selection Q&A

Which dairy breed produces the highest milk volume?

Holstein-Friesian. The matrix above puts HF at 8,000–11,000 litres per 305-day lactation, but only under good management: HF has the lowest heat tolerance of the breeds compared (THI threshold around 68), so it needs active summer cooling with fans and soakers in hot climates such as Pakistan's.

Which dairy breed is best for heat tolerance?

Indigenous zebu (Bos indicus) breeds. In the matrix above, Sahiwal has the highest heat-stress threshold (THI around 80), followed by the F1 Sahiwal × Holstein cross (around 78). Zebu breeds such as Sahiwal and Cholistani also resist ticks better than exotic breeds — but they give much less milk than Holsteins.

Why is the F1 Crossbred (Sahiwal × Holstein) so popular in Punjab?

The F1 cross is half Holstein and half Sahiwal, so it gives far more milk than a Sahiwal (4,500–6,000 litres per lactation in the matrix above, around 18–24 litres a day) while keeping much of the Sahiwal's heat tolerance (THI threshold around 78), tick resistance and richer milk (about 4.0–4.4% fat). That lets farms get good yields without the full freestall-and-cooling investment a purebred Holstein herd needs.

Keep Multi-Breed Herd Records in One Place

Record HF, Jersey, Brown Swiss, crossbred and other cattle in one account, with per-cow lactation curves, breeding and pregnancy records, and per-pen feeding plans. Herd Manager is built for dairy cattle: buffalo can be recorded under breed “Other”, but buffalo-specific gestation (about 310 days) is not supported yet.
