Cattle vs. Buffalo Gestation: Understanding Physiological Milestones

Why water buffaloes require 28 additional days of gestation and specialized reproductive management.

Dairy Cattle Gestation (282 Days)

Dairy cattle (Holstein, Jersey, Sahiwal and crossbreds) average 282 days from successful conception to parturition (normal physiological range: 279–287 days). Brown Swiss cows usually carry longer, about 290 days on average, so expect them to calve roughly a week after the cattle date this calculator shows. A 60-day dry period allows mammary tissue involution and regeneration, while a 21-day close-up steaming ration helps reduce the risk of hypocalcemia (milk fever) and ketosis.

  • Ultrasound Check: Day 28–35 after AI, with a recheck at day 60–70.
  • Dry-Off Timing: About 60 days before the expected calving date.
  • Lead Feeding: High-protein, balanced anionic salts 21 days pre-calving.

Water Buffalo Gestation (310 Days)

Water buffaloes (Nili-Ravi, Kundi, Murrah) carry calves for an average of 310 days (range: 305–320 days), approximately 4 weeks longer than cows. Buffaloes show more silent heat than cattle and breed seasonally, mostly in autumn and winter in Pakistan.

  • Gestation Length: About 310 days on average in riverine buffaloes.
  • Silent Heat Mitigation: Ovsynch and CIDR protocol synchronization.
  • Wallowing & Cooling: Helps protect embryo survival in summer heat.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the animal. "Dairy cow" covers Holstein-Friesian, Jersey, Sahiwal and similar breeds. The gestation length used is shown next to each option: 282 days for cattle, 310 for buffalo, 150 for goats and 147 for sheep. The pregnancy-check, dry-off and close-up timings are cattle and buffalo figures, so for goats and sheep plan those dates with your vet.
  2. Enter the date of insemination or natural service. It starts at today's date.
  3. Set the voluntary waiting period: the number of days after calving before you want to breed her again. It starts at 50 days.
  4. Print the timeline, or press Add to calendar (.ics) to put every milestone in your phone calendar.

Reading the result

The six boxes follow the pregnancy in order. Book the ultrasound check and the recheck in the windows shown. Dry her off on the dry-off date, 60 days before the expected calving, and move her to the close-up ration 21 days before. The expected calving date is an average, so plan for her to calve anywhere in the normal range shown under it and start watching her closely before that range begins. The earliest rebreeding date is the expected calving date plus your waiting period; move it if she calves early or late.

FAQ

Common questions about gestation

How long cows and buffaloes carry, when to dry them off, and why there are two pregnancy checks.

How many days is the gestation period for a cow?

About 282 days on average, with a normal range of 279–287 days, for Holstein, Jersey, Sahiwal and crossbred cattle. Breed, the sex of the calf and twins can all move the actual calving date earlier or later.

How long is a Nili-Ravi or Murrah buffalo pregnant?

About 310 days on average, with a normal range of 305–320 days, for Nili-Ravi, Kundi and Murrah buffaloes. That is roughly 28 days longer than a cow.

When should I dry off a pregnant cow or buffalo?

About 60 days before the expected calving date. The dry period lets the udder rest, repair its milk-making tissue and get ready to produce colostrum. If you want a shorter dry period, plan it with your vet.

Why are there two pregnancy checks?

The first check, 28–35 days after breeding, finds open animals early so they can be bred again sooner. Some pregnancies are lost after that, so the recheck at day 60–70 confirms she is still pregnant before you plan her dry-off.
