Preventing outbreaks & keeping
drug residues out of milk.

Infectious disease outbreaks and drug residues are among the biggest biological risks to dairy farm profitability. Explore the vaccination calendar for FMD, HS, LSD, Black Quarter and Brucellosis, Theileriosis treatment, first steps in an FMD outbreak, and a reference table of typical withdrawal periods.

Summary: Effective herd health in Pakistan requires strict biosecurity, twice-yearly FMD vaccination (O, A, Asia-1), pre-monsoon HS protection, tick management for Theileriosis, and routine CMT mastitis monitoring. With HerdManager.co, farms get in-app reminders when vaccinations and deworming are due, and a daily milk-withdrawal alert after every recorded treatment until the animal's milk is safe again.

Annual Vaccination Calendar for Pakistan

Vaccine timing must align precisely with seasonal pathogen prevalence. Administering vaccines during periods of extreme heat stress or during active disease incubation reduces antibody titers.

Disease Target Species & Age Optimal Timing Frequency
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD / Munh Khur) All Cattle & Buffalo >3 months Sept–Oct & Feb–March Every 6 months (Bi-annual)
Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS / Gal Ghotu) Buffaloes (Highly susceptible) & Cattle May–June (Pre-monsoon) Annually before heavy rains
Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) Exotic, Crossbred & Native Cattle March–April (Pre-vector surge) Annually (Live attenuated Neethling)
Black Quarter (BQ / Chhohya) Young Cattle & Buffalo (6–24 months) April–May Annually in endemic zones
Bovine Brucellosis (S19 / RB51) Female calves only (4–8 months) Once in lifetime Do not vaccinate pregnant or adult stock
SECTION 02 / HALAL WITHDRAWAL MATRIX

Antibiotic & Pharmaceutical Withdrawal Periods

Ensuring that no milk from treated cows enters the human food supply is a moral imperative, a Halal requirement, and a legal requirement under Punjab Food Authority rules; corporate dairies also test for residues and can reject milk at collection.

Active Medication Common Use Case Milk Withdrawal (Discard) Meat Withdrawal
Oxytetracycline LA 20% Pneumonia, Anaplasmosis, Foot rot 7 Days (168 Hours) 28 Days
Penicillin-Streptomycin Mastitis, Metritis, Deep wounds 72 Hours (3 Days) 14 Days
Ceftiofur Sodium Acute Metritis, Bovine Respiratory 0 Hours (Zero Discard) 4 Days
Meloxicam (Injectable) Anti-inflammatory, pain relief 5 Days (120 Hours) 15 Days
Albendazole 10% Oral Internal parasite deworming 72 Hours (3 Days) 14 Days
Ivermectin 1% Ecto & endoparasites (Ticks/Mange) Not for Lactating Dairy Cows 35 Days or More (Check Label)

These are typical label values for common products and are a guide only. Withdrawal periods differ between brands, doses and routes of use, so always follow the product label or your vet, and if in doubt keep the milk out for longer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Livestock Health & Veterinary Q&A

When should dairy animals be vaccinated against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Pakistan?

Give a trivalent FMD vaccine (covering the O, A and Asia-1 strains) twice a year, every 6 months: the first round in September–October before winter and the second in February–March. Include all cattle and buffaloes older than 3 months, and follow your veterinarian's or local livestock department's schedule for your area.

What is the treatment for Theileriosis (Tick Fever) in exotic and crossbred cows?

Theileriosis needs a veterinarian. The vet confirms it (usually with a blood smear) and prescribes the treatment — typically the anti-theilerial drug buparvaquone plus supportive care such as fever control, and a blood transfusion if anaemia is severe. Do not self-dose. Record the milk and meat withdrawal period of every drug used, and prevent repeat cases with regular tick control.

Why is antibiotic withdrawal tracking critical for Halal milk compliance in Pakistan?

Milk from a treated animal can carry drug residues until the withdrawal period has passed. Residues make milk unfit for sale under Halal and food-safety standards, can cause allergic reactions in sensitive consumers, and add to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Residue-free milk is required by the Punjab Food Authority and by corporate dairies, which can reject milk that contains residues — so every treated animal's milk must stay out of the bulk tank until its withdrawal date.

What should I do immediately during an FMD outbreak?

Isolate sick animals immediately, call your vet and report the outbreak to your local livestock department. Put disinfectant foot baths, such as washing soda (4% sodium carbonate), at shed entrances and limit people and vehicles moving between sheds. Clean mouth and foot lesions with a mild antiseptic your vet recommends, and give soft, palatable feed and plenty of clean water. Ask your vet about pain relief and treatment for secondary infections, and vaccinate animals that are not yet sick only on your vet's advice.

How does HerdManager.co safeguard against milk discard errors?

When you log a treatment and pick the medicine from your stock, HerdManager.co applies that medicine's withdrawal period to the animal and raises a “Milk Withdrawal Active” alert showing the days remaining and the date its milk is safe again. The alert is also shown to staff who only have milking access, so milkers know to keep that animal's milk out of the tank.

Keep Vaccinations & Withdrawal Periods on Track

HerdManager.co reminds you when vaccinations and deworming are due, records each treatment against your medicine stock, and shows a daily Milk Withdrawal Active alert until a treated animal's milk is safe again.
